Splendor in Savannah

Window to The Bay #21
Happy Friday! Did you have a good Valentine’s Day? I’ve loved Valentine’s Day since I was a little girl as my earliest memories of the holiday encompassed the warmth and love of family and friends. I remember the excitement of the breakfast table that my mom prepared with our cereal in heart shaped bowls. I remember the arts and crafts of hand made valentines, as well as the colorful graphic designs and cheeky messages of store bought card sets. I hope you felt the love this Valentine’s Day in whatever shape or form!
A Watercolor Family Home Portrait in the Heart of Historic Savannah
This month’s Window to The Bay watercolor house portrait comes from the charming Southern town of Savannah, Georgia painted as a Christmas gift commission by a wife for her husband. Oh the splendor of the South! I have a special place in my heart for the beauty of the South, having spent many childhood summers in Charleston, South Carolina, extended family gatherings in Louisville, Kentucky, and college visits to my sister in Lexington, Virginia. This stately Savannah home with its bold shutters, charming side porch, and live oak pulls my heart strings back to my earliest travels and sketches of beautiful homes in the South. I loved seeing in the inspiration photos that the home had been the backdrop of a horse and carriage snapshot of Historic Savannah for a magazine. I’ve been reading a lot of Cinderella recently, so the thought of a horse and carriage passing your home on a daily basis is pretty magical! We had to include that in the portrait. A few other special details that were meaningful to the new homeowners made it feel extra personal - the potted lemon tree and the splash of sky blue ceiling paint on the porch; a plaque on the home’s exterior celebrating its history. It was extra special for me to paint this beautiful home for a couple whose wedding program I had painted years ago - it’s wonderful to see how their family has grown since then!

Watercolor Paintings Available in 3 Border Styles
I truly enjoy making each watercolor home portrait as unique and special as each person who lives there. In addition to the custom personal details in the illustration, Window to The Bay portraits come with the option of three border styles - “The Natural” (a soft watercolor edge), “The Modern” (a single black line around the portrait, pictured here in the Savannah portrait), and “The Blues” (a blue and white custom painted border inspired by the architecture). Framing styles are so varied and personal that I’m happy to accommodate clients who prefer to receive their custom art unframed. It’s always fun to follow up later and see how the final framing turned out. I love how the Savannah home portrait framing turned out in classic elegance with a black frame and gold lined mat to complement the modern border. The art looked so polished on a wall full of family memories in coordinating black frames.
With love for the every day and special days,
Laura Ann Trimble Elbogen
